On Salt of the Earth: Documenting Heaven & Hell

The other night I watched a documentary about the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Delgado. Salt of the Earth was a stunning display of human life in all its suffering and all its beauty. Delgado documented mining conditions, genocide, starvation, migration, and war in over 120 countries over the last half century. He has also documented some of the most remote natural places and rarely seen species on the planet. The documentary was filmed by his son and offers fascinating insight into the life of this incredible photojournalist. I felt more human watching it. I was both enthralled and appalled by the wonder and horror of the human experience. It was fascinating to get a glimpse of what it was like to touch down in the middle of a catastrophe and bear witness to unimaginable human dramas unfolding.

The documentary is available on Netflix. I highly recommend it.
